How can I add even more peanut butter?

As written, this recipe is perfect for those who love the perfect chocolate & peanut butter combo that comes with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. But if you love peanut butter even more than chocolate, you can definitely add even more!

If you just can’t get enough peanut butter, consider mixing peanut butter chips in with the marshmallow mixture, and maybe even adding some Reese’s Pieces to the top!

Can I use chocolate chips instead of Reese’s Mini Peanut Butter Cups?

Yes! You can use chocolate chips and still get a good peanut butter cup flavor profile by still using the peanut butter, or you can turn these into chocolate Rice Krispies Treats by switching the peanut butter with Nutella.

Or if you want to keep things extra simple, you can simply make Chocolate Chip Rice Krispies Treats by skipping the spread mix-in altogether and just adding chocolate chips on top of traditional Rice Krispie Treats.

Are there any other variations on this recipe that I can try?

Not that into peanut butter cups or want to offer a variety? Here are some other great options:

Chocolate drizzle:Cover the marshmallow mixture with a drizzle of melted chocolate.

Caramel and sea salt:Drizzle melted caramel or caramel sauce over the top of the treats and sprinkle with sea salt

Pretzel:Add crushed up pretzels and add them to the mixture before spreading in the pan

S’mores:Add graham cracker crumbs to the mixture and top the whole thing with mini marshmallows, graham cracker crumble and a drizzle of chocolate

Coconut:For a tropical twist perfect for summer, mix shredded coconut into the mixture

Can I make these in the oven?

Rice Krispies Treats are typically made on the stovetop, but you could just as easily- or even more so- make them in the oven. Here’s how:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add the cereal
  3. In another mixing bowl, mix the peanut butter and marshmallows
  4. Melt butter in the microwave in a microwave safe bowl until melted
  5. Pour the melted butter over the peanut butter and marshmallow mixture and stir until fully combined
  6. Pour the mixture over the rice cereal until fully coated
  7. Transfer the mixture to a 9×13 baking dish
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until the treats are set and slightly golden brown
  9. Allow treats to cool for about 10 minutes, then add chopped peanut butter cups
  10. Allow treats to cool fully before cutting into squares

Can I make these treats in advance and store them for later?

Definitely, but you’ll want to make sure to take a few specific steps first to make sure they stay fresh!

  1. Make sure the treats have fully cooled.
  2. Cut them into squares and place them in an airtight container.
  3. Separate layers of bars with wax paper or parchment paper to keep them from sticking together.
  4. Store at room temperature for up to 2-3 days.

Need to store them for longer? You can also freeze them! Here’s how:

  1. Make sure the treats have fully cooled.
  2. Cut into squares and place on a baking sheet.
  3. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for a few hours, until the treats are frozen solid.
  4. Place the frozen treats in an airtight container or freezer bag and store in the freezer for 2-3 months
  5. When ready to enjoy, remove from the freezer and let come to room temperature for about 10-15 minutes.

Are there any other cereals I can make these with?

Yes! Cereal is one of my favorite things to eat for breakfast, and I’ve had fun making marshmallow treats with quite a few varieties.

Not all cereal varieties go well with peanut butter cups, so I’d stick to something that’s either plain or already chocolate or peanut butter flavored. Some great choices would be Reese’s Puffs. Cocoa Pebbles, Cheerios, Corn Flakes, or Cocoa Puffs.
