Sharlene Mawdsley has made no secret of wanting Rhasidat Adeleke on Ireland’s Olympic relay teams in Paris – but added she would respect her decision “regardless of what she does” at this summer’s Games. Ireland’s medal prospects in the relays are considerable given the gold and silver successes at the European Championships in June, with the mixed 4x400m relay quartet of Mawdsley, Adeleke, Thomas Barr and Chris O’Donnell striking gold in memorable fashion in Rome. There was then silver for the women’s 4x400m relay team, which was comprised of Mawdsley, Adeleke, Sophie Becker and Phil Healy. While Adeleke was influential in team events, she may opt out of some relay duties in order to focus on individual success in the 400m category at the Olympics. Mawdsley declared she would be out on the track in Paris “as many times” as she is able either side of her individual event. ‘To be an Olympian means everything, and I’m a big team player,’ she began. ‘I love the relays. So I don’t see why I wouldn’t do it.’ Assessing Adeleke’s ultimatum, Mawdsley asserted she would have “no hard feelings” if the Tallaght runner pulled back from relay events to apply herself for glory in the individual 400m event. The Newport native added that because she didn’t view herself as a gold medal contender in the individual event this time around, she wasn’t going to make sweeping statements about what she would hypothetically do in Adeleke’s situation. She said: ‘I think Rhasidat has to make the decision that’s best for her. And I would have no hard feelings at all. ‘I don’t think I’m going to be challenging for a gold medal, not this year anyway, so I’m not in that position to be able to say what I would do. Ireland’s Olympics team are in Paris ‘to compete, not participate’ ‘But I respect her decision regardless of what she does, of course we would absolutely love to have her on the team, that’s no secret, but whatever she does is what’s best for her.’ Today's top videos
