Abstract
Mahler’s sense of spiritual matters is rife with contradiction. He was born to a Jewish family, but while he did receive some religious teachings, at no time were the Mahler’s a particularly devout family, as his father was far more concerned with assimilating into Gentile society. In 1897, Mahler was baptized as a Catholic at the Kleine Michaelskirche in Hamburg in order to be considered for a position at the Vienna Hofoper, one of the most prestigious conducting positions in Europe, which was confined by a policy against hiring Jews. For years prior to his baptism, Mahler composed works that wrestle with topics of Christianity as a medium through which he explored his own spiritual beliefs and enabled himself to move forward with his conversion.
